Faculty Member, Basque Institute of Competitiveness
Senior Researcher (Basque Institute of Competitiveness), Teaching Faculty (Deusto Business School)
About
My primary research interests relate to socio-economic development and competitiveness policies. In particular I am interested in understanding and improving the interface between business, policy and territorial economic development processes. I am currently working in four main areas related to these issues:
- Conceptualisation, measurement and comparatve analysis of different dimensions of regional competitiveness
- Clusters and networking policies, with a specific focus on the evaluation of these 'soft' policies and processes of policy learning
- Governance of socio-economic development processes: multi-level and democracy considerations
- The role of universities in society, in particular the interface between academic research and public policy
In addition to my primary post as Senior Researcher at the Basque Institute of Competitiveness, I am an adjunct faculty member of the Deusto Business School at the University of Deusto, where I teach theory of industrial organisation and specific doctoral seminars related to my research.
Previously to moving to Spain I was a tenured lecturer in industrial and labour economics at the Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham, UK (2002-2007). I have a PhD in commerce (University of Birmingham, UK), MSocSci in economics (University of Cape Town, South Africa) and BSc in economics (University of Warwick, UK).
